Term 3 Newsletter 2008

The Show: Term 3 is an exciting term as the classes start to learn and rehearse their show dances. This year the ballet students will perform "The Magic Lake" but if you remember it from 3 years ago you will find it quite different as we have significantly developed it to include the junior ballet students too. The ballet is a traditional story about a quest to find water from a magic lake to cure a wounded prince. It promises to be exciting and beautiful to watch and you will meet some colourful characters including the northern lights, water lilies, naiads, draiads, butterflies and members of the royal court.

This year we will also be treated to a special performance by our newly established dance company, One Step Beyond. The contemporary dance students will also perform so the show will be diverse and entertaining.
From now on it is going to be a lot of fun and very exciting as we prepare to perform. To all the helpers - a very big THANK YOU!!! We couldn't do it without you.

Show Rehearsals: The show is a very important part of the programme and provides a challenging opportunity for the students to learn choreography and practise carefully to achieve their very best. Each class will learn their dance(s) during their normal class time. Please make a special effort to come every week unless you are sick. It can be very frustrating and confusing for everyone if people are missing. Please let your teacher know if you will be absent from rehearsals or if you are unable to be in the show at all.

Show Dates and Venue Change: Due to Westlake making the mistake of double booking their auditorium the show venue has been changed - but in fact we think for the better. We will now perform the show at Whangaparaoa College Theatre on exactly the same dates. This theatre is just the right size for us with the seats tiered up from the stage so everyone will get a clear view. There is also sufficient dressing room space to house us all.

Theatre Rehearsals: Thursday 30th October (after school - seniors only)
Friday 31st October (after school - seniors only)
Saturday 1st November (from 9am onwards - full cast)

Shows: Saturday 1st November at 6.30pm
Sunday 2nd November at 12.30pm and 4.30pm.

Level 1 and 2 Ballet Students Share Roles: To cater for the needs of the youngest ballet students L1 will perform in the Sunday 12.30pm show only and L2 will perform in the Saturday 6.30pm and Sunday 4.30pm shows. All other students will perform in all 3 shows.

Ticket Sales: Tickets will be on sale towards the end of this term. Notices detailing how to buy tickets will be sent home closer to the time.
Prior Notice - Full Cast Rehearsals Next Term - ballet students only:
We will need to hold full cast rehearsals during the second and third weeks of Term 4 in order to put the whole ballet together. Consequently your normal class day and time may change during these two weeks. Detailed timetables will follow closer to the time.

Production Cost: A group of dedicated parents are well underway busily sewing costumes and constructing scenery. Each year we continue to add to our wardrobe and costumes are frequently reused and adapted to keep the cost down. We ask that each performer contributes a small amount which goes towards the cost of costumes, scenery and props. If you are willing to spend a little time helping sew costumes please write your name on the list at the hall.
First role: $25.00
Subsequent Roles: Additional $15.00 per role (i.e if performing 3 roles Production Cost will be as follows: $25 + $15 + $15 = $55.00)
Please pay this amount ASAP.

Show Notice Board: Later in the term this will be on display in the Torbay Community Hall during classes. We will be asking for volunteers to help with a wide range of jobs including child supervision, ticket selling and various jobs at the theatre. Please volunteer for something - many hands make light work. The end result of seeing such a wonderful show and the students' happy faces when performing so confidently on stage is well worth the effort.

Marian's New Mobile Phone Number: My old Telecom phone has finally decided to stop working so I'm afraid now I only have my Vodaphone number - 021 027 01303. Please update my details in your phone books.

One Step Beyond Launch: On Sunday August 3rd we launched this talented new company with a very professional performance at the hall. We had a large and very appreciative audience and the feed back has been excellent with people literally raving about how entertaining and professional the show was. The technical standard of the dancers was very high and the dancers demonstrated the ability to master some very challenging complicated choreography. Three of the company members choreographed pieces which were both visually appealing and thought provoking and the company also performed works by Katie Burton, Colette Arnold and Marian McDermott. Watch this space as this company is definitely going places!
