Term
3 Newsletter 2003
Greetings everyone
Katie Burton to help Choreograph Nelson Wearable
Arts Show:
I begin with some very exciting news. Katie Burton (our Contemporary Dance
Tutor) has been invited to be one of the choreographers for the Nelson
Wearable Arts Show. This is an enormous honour for Katie as this is an
International event of huge standing. It is an indication of Katie's outstanding
talent as a chorographer that she has been invited to work on this highly
esteemed show. Katie will need to live in Nelson for the whole of Term
3 and unfortunately this will make it impossible for her to teach the
Contemporary Dance classes in Term 3. Katie will be back teaching in Term
4 and I think you'll all agree that we are fortunate to have such a talented
person to teach our students as often as we do. I am pleased to announce
that Deanna Gorini will teach the classes
while Katie is away.
Annual Show:
Excitement is building as by now all the ballet classes are having fun
learning their dances for this year's annual show. The annual show is
an important part of the dance programme at the school and one of the
main ways we provide a challenging and positive performance experience
for our students instead of entering them into dance exams and/or competitions.
When: Sunday September 7th 2003.
Performance Times: 1.00pm and 4.30pm
Where: Centrestage Theatre, Centreway Rd, Orewa
Please tell your teacher immediately if you are
unable to perform in the show.
There will be several dance items this year. The
major ballet item is:
"The Greatest Show on Earth"
This is a very funny ballet story about a circus
that is having some problems getting the right people performing in the
right roles. This ballet involves all the ballet students.

Some of the Level 7/8 ballet students will also perform
a classical ballet piece called "The Gathering" which is danced
to beautiful piano music composed by talented local teenager, Rose Chen
- many of you will remember Rose as she played the piano for the ballet
classes last year. Rose will play her original composition "live"
for the show.
The Theatre Class will perform a contemporary ballet
called "Within, Without" and the Contemporary Dance students
will also perform.
Commitment:
To all students I wish to encourage your total commitment to this production.
It is an opportunity for you all to demonstrate your very best dancing
in a positive and supportive environment. I am confident that you will
all enjoy the challenge and rewards of dancing on stage.
Show Notice Board:
This will be on display in the hall from now on and will detail information
to do with the show. Please check it regularly for information. Newsletters
will be sent home from time to time too.
So all in all from now on it will a busy and exciting time as we prepare
for our annual show.
Old Friends:
Just a thought. Recently I discovered a really interesting site on the
internet. It is a site where you can locate old friends from school and
clubs etc and gives you a chance to take a walk down memory lane. It is
well worth a look if you'd like to find out about what your old friends
are up to these days. I have added "Marian McDermott School of Dance"
as a club/organisation so please join up and add your name if you'd like
to keep in contact with ex dance class members. The website address is:
www.oldfriends.co.nz
Here's to another successful show! Good luck everyone.
