Newsletter Terms 2 and 3 2011
Hi everyone
Enthusiasm is high and the students are very excited now that most classes
have started show rehearsals. It does seem a little strange to be started
so early in the year but things are progressing very nicely. It is important
that everyone comes to class each week now so that the show dances can
be taught and rehearsed. It can be very frustrating and confusing for
everyone if people are missing. If you are unwell or will be unavoidably
absent for some other reason please let me know.
Term Dates Reminder: Just
a reminder that term 2 ends on Saturday 16th July and term 3 commences
on Monday 1st August. The timetable and fee schedule for term 3 is attached
to this email.

One Step Beyond News: Our
youth company One Step Beyond is back into the swing of things and this
year there are 9 company members. We are pleased to welcome two newcomers
- Megan West and Monique Westerdaal. The company is developing some exciting
new repertoire with choreographers Georgie Goater, Janine Parkes and Grace
Woollett, plus some of the company members are choreographing pieces too.
Last week they performed for the first time this year at the Northcross
Intermediate Dance show. Feedback was very positive and it was great to
see them perform so professionally and confidently.

Senior Student at NZ School
of Dance: One of our senior students and One Step Beyond company member,
Gemma Herbison recently spent a week at the NZ School of Dance in Wellington.
Gemma won the School's prestigious Winter School Senior Scholarship last
year. It was a great opportunity to spend time in a full-time, professional
programme and Gemma found the experience rewarding. It was very well deserved
by such a talented and dedicated dancer. Well done Gemma - we are all
very proud of you!

The Annual Show: This year
we are repeating two ballets we premiered in 2006. The senior ballet is
one of my all time favourites: "Be Careful What You Wish For"
is a modern story about a girl who is obsessed with playing a computer
game. She becomes so engrossed with it that it seems to become reality.
She must go on a difficult quest to find her younger sister. With stunning
costumes and music and some clever special effects this ballet promises
to appeal to everyone. The junior ballet is a deliciously themed ballet
"Sweets". This year we have developed it further and introduce
some new sweets to the mix - jelly beans, sherbet and bubblegum. We also
have performances from our jazz and contemporary students so the show
will be diverse and entertaining. From now on it promises to be challenging,
exciting and great fun as we prepare to perform.

Hand Sewers Needed Please:
We need volunteers to do some hand sewing on some costumes worn by levels
6 and 7 ballet students. Please let Marian know if you can help.
Production Cost: A group of
dedicated parents are well underway busily sewing costumes and constructing
scenery and props. Each year we continue to add to our wardrobe and costumes
are frequently reused and adapted to keep the cost down.
We ask that each performer contributes a small amount which goes towards
the cost of costumes, scenery, props and special lighting.
Production Cost for each student is as follows: First role - $30.00 Subsequent
Roles - an additional $20.00 per role (i.e if performing 3 roles Production
Cost will be as follows: $30 + $20 + $20 = $70.00). We ask all ballet,
contemporary and jazz students to pay this ASAP please. Cast lists for
the ballets are now on display on the notice board at the hall so please
check if you are unsure how many roles you will have. Please count contemporary
and/or jazz classes as one role each too.
Show Notice Board: Later in
term 3 this will be on display in the Torbay Community Hall during classes.
We will be asking for volunteers to help with a wide range of jobs including
child supervision at the full cast rehearsals at the hall and at the theatre,
ticket selling and various other jobs at the theatre. Please volunteer
for a task - many hands make light work. The end result of seeing such
a wonderful show and the students' happy faces when performing so confidently
on stage is well worth the effort.

Thank You: To all our helpers
- a very big THANK YOU!!! We couldn't do it without you.
We are looking forward to
another great show.
Happy dancing!
Marian
