Term 2 Newsletter 2010

Hi everyone

End of Term 2 Sharing Sessions: Monday June 28th - Saturday July 3rd: Term 2 has nearly finished and as in previous years we warmly invite family and friends to come and watch classes during the last week. Students will demonstrate work covered so far this year. Students are asked to come tidily dressed in suitable dance attire with long hair tied back neatly (Ballet Level 5 and up - in a ballet bun please). Also no wrist watches or jewellery other than small stud earrings please. These sharing sessions are at the normal class time.

One Step Beyond Show: "Into the Light"
Sunday 15th August @ 7.30pm. Venue: Torbay Community Hall
Our very own youth dance company One Step Beyond will perform another wonderfully creative and inspiring show in our hall and we encourage you to come and support them. Several works will be performed with choreography by Katie Burton, Janine Parkes, Zhara Killeen-Chance and the company members. One Step Beyond is a huge asset to the school and provides an avenue for our most talented senior students to be really challenged and inspired. Please ensure to come to this show as we really need your support to keep this company going. Bring your family and friends! Tickets will be on sale at the start of term 3.

Farewell Janine Parkes: We will all be sorry to say goodbye to contemporary dance tutor Janine Parkes at the end of this term as she is expecting her first baby later this year. Janine has worked at the school since last year and has been a tremendous asset. She has been a dedicated, knowledgeable and inspiring tutor and we will all miss her. Thank you Janine and best wishes for the safe arrival of your new baby!

Welcome Zhara Killeen-Chance: I am pleased to announce that Zhara Killeen Chance will take over teaching Janine's classes and One Step Beyond in term 3 and in term 4 up until the show. Zhara is a graduate of the NZ School of Dance and is currently undertaking post graduate studies in dance at the University of Auckland. After the show Katie Burton will take over so the contemporary students will be spoilt for excellent tutors this year.

Annual Show:
Things will start to get more exciting in term 3 as we start to work towards our annual show. The show will be performed at Whangaparaoa College Theatre on Saturday 30th October and Sunday 31st October. There will be three performances. Saturday at 6.30pm, Sunday at 12.00pm and 5.00pm.
All the students will perform - ballet, contemporary and jazz. Students will learn their dances and rehearse during normal class time. Details about special group rehearsals at the hall and the theatre will follow nearer to the time. Please let both your tutor and Marian know if for some reason you will not be able to perform in the show.

Production Cost:
There are lots of additional costs associated with putting on our annual show. We try very hard to keep the costs of performing in this show to minimum and in order to save money we very much rely on parents to help out with a range of jobs including sewing costumes, constructing scenery and props and helping out at the rehearsals and at the theatre. Over the years we have built up a marvellous resource which we can make good use of. We are constantly mending and adapting costumes. We ask that each student contributes a small amount of money which goes towards the cost of costume hire, props, scenery, and lighting. This year we have set the production cost as follows: 1st role $30.00, each additional role $20.00. Therefore if you are performing three roles then your production cost will work out as follows: $30.00 + $20.00 + $20.00 = $70.00. Please pay the production cost as soon as possible. If paying with your term 3 fees there is a place on the fees form where you can include your production cost amount. Jazz and contemporary students are asked to also pay the production cost please. Please count these classes as one role per class.

Helpers Still Needed: Unfortunately so far we have not had any new people offer to help with the costume making and so we still need machine sewers to volunteer to take on a sewing task. Please phone Lesley Taylor if you can help: 473 9299

Over Lock Machine Sewer Urgently Needed: Please phone Lesley on 473 9299 if you can make the Jelly Fish costumes. One of our regular sewers is unfortunately no longer available and we desperately need a capable over lock sewer to volunteer to help.

Students - Tie Hair Up and Suitable Dance Attire Only Please: Just a little reminder - students please ensure your hair is tied back neatly for your dance class. Ballet students level 5 and up should tie it up in a ballet bun (a hair net is essential). There is nothing more frustrating than loose hair flicking in your eyes when you are trying to master a tricky dance move. Please note that "hoodies" or sweat shirts are not suitable as warm cover up in the winter months. Acceptable items are cross over cardigans or close fitting stretch jerseys. Check with your tutor if you are unsure. Please do not wear jewellery other than small stud earrings to class.

Holiday Dates and term 3 Fees:
Term 2 ends on Saturday July 3rd. Term 3 commences on Monday July 19th. I have attached the notice which details term 3 class times and fees. Remember to qualify for the Early Bird rate you need to pay at or before your first class of term.

I look forward to seeing you all back after the break - it promises to be lots of fun as we work towards the show! Happy dancing everyone.

Marian
