Term
2 Newsletter 2005
Hello Everyone
Term 2 is well underway already
and as usual enthusiasm is high with many classes full.
Welcome to our new Hip Hop/Jazz
Tutor:
Unfortunately due to his very heavy workload Barnaby James is unable to
continue teaching the Hip Hop/Jazz classes. He will continue teaching
the Contemporary Dance class on Saturdays though.
I would like to warmly welcome our talented new Hip Hop/Jazz Tutor, Emma
Davidge. Emma hails from Christchurch and has taught Hip Hop, Jazz and
Contemporary Dance classes at Dance Corporate, Christchurch Girls High
School and Southern Ballet. Her classes promise to be both fun and challenging
with a strong emphasis on technique.

Student Accepted into Royal
NZ Ballet Mentor Programme:
Congratulations to Charlotte Taylor who has been accepted into the Royal
NZ Ballet Mentor programme. This is a big achievement as only about six
mentorships are awarded nationally each year. Charlotte has already met
her mentor and observed a company class and rehearsal. Charlotte is actually
the second student from this school to be accepted in to the programme
as last year Candy Cain was also successful.
Annual Show Dates Reminder:
Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th, October - Centrestage Theatre, Orewa.
Theatre Rehearsals - afternoon/evening of Friday October 28th and/or the
morning of Saturday 29th too. All the dance students (Ballet, Hip Hop/Jazz
and Contemporary Dance) are invited to perform in the show so please make
a careful note of these show dates in your diaries now!
Help Please!
At this early stage we need offers of help with costume making and scenery
design and construction. Please see Marian if you have ideas, experience
or enthusiasm in these areas. We also always appreciate donations of unneeded
braid, thread, buttons, fabric, sequins, elastic, ribbon, glittery stuff
etc so please don't just throw it out. Now that we have a proper wardrobe
facility we can store useful items.
Tidy Dress at Class Please:
Please remember to dress neatly and appropriately for your class - if
in doubt check with your tutor. In particular please tie hair back neatly.
Level 5 Ballet students and up - long hair needs to be in a bun. We have
been reflecting on the suitability of the short chiffon ballet skirts
and have come to the conclusion that we can teach technique more effectively
if Ballet students don't wear them. We understand that many students prefer
to wear a skirt for modesty reasons so even though we recommend that Ballet
students just wear leotards and tights we won't insist on this.
Onlookers - Quiet Please:
Just a reminder - when watching classes please be very quiet and remain
seated if possible so distractions are kept to the minimum. The students
want to get the most out of their class!
Choreography (Make up a Dance) Day:
Sunday July 3rd Torbay Community
Hall - perform on the stage
Last year Choreography Day
was a huge success and the students had a great time making up their own
dances and performing them before an audience. So therefore we have planned
another one for this year and we hope even more budding choreographers
will participate.
Katie Burton has agreed to come along again this year and give helpful
feedback. Katie is a well known and highly regarded NZ Choreographer and
many students will remember her as she previously taught the Contemporary
Dance classes.
Students are invited to choreograph and perform a dance.
You need to choreograph it at home in your own time or contact Marian
if you want to rent the hall.
It can be any style - Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop etc.
Can be a solo or a group - get together with some your dance mates - costumes
optional.
You will be able to run through your dance on the stage in the morning.
Showing time will be at 1.00pm. Friends and family are invited to watch
the show.
Sound system will be available - bring music on CD or Tape.
To enter complete an entry form - $10.00 entry fee per item to cover costs.
Closing date for entries: 26/6/05
Don't be shy to have a go
making up your own dance - it promises to be another fun learning experience
for you all!
Best wishes to you all and
keep dancing.
Marian
