Terms 1 & 2 Newsletter 2003

Greetings everyone

Classes for 2003 are now well underway and the school is continuing to grow with class numbers very healthy. Enthusiasm is high and returning students enjoy facing the challenges offered at their new level. Ballet is a very rewarding dance technique to study as the exercises and steps become progressively more complicated. The technique is often tricky to master but the sense of achievement is great when you get something difficult right.

"Mummy, you might think that ballet looks easy, but actually it's quite hard!" A Level 1 student (aged 5) made this enthusiastic comment to her mother the other day and I thought you'd all like to share it.

Contemporary Dance:
Classes continue on Friday afternoons and newcomers are always welcome. These popular classes taught by the inspiring Katie Burton, compliment the ballet programme beautifully. They are great fun and very creative. The students get lots of opportunities to choreograph their own movement.

Pilates Body Conditioning:
Our new teacher is Vicky Archbold and she is absolutely fantastic. I can personally recommend her classes as I attend Pilates (pronounced per lar tees) classes with her myself. I find Pilates a real help in keeping my aging and often tired body strong and injury free.

Cara's Baby:
Just in case you haven't already heard; Cara is now the proud mother of a little baby boy named Darcy. I'm sure you will all wish to join me in congratulating Cara, Billy and Briana. We look forward to seeing little Darcy at ballet in 5 years time!

The Show:
This year our annual show will be performed in September at Centrestage Theatre, Orewa. All students are invited to perform in the show. The main ballet item will be "The Greatest Show on Earth" and there will also be other items from both the senior Ballet students and the Contemporary Dance students.

Please make careful notes of the following dates on your calendar now:

Show Performances: Sunday September 7th @ 1.00pm and 4.30pm.
Theatre rehearsals: Saturday September 6th and/or Sunday September 7th between 8.30am and 12.00pm. Detailed rehearsal schedules will follow closer to the time.

Combined Cast Rehearsals at the Torbay Hall:
Most probably will be during the weeks commencing August 18th and 25th. Ballet students will most likely be needed to attend rehearsals on days/times different to normal. Detailed rehearsal schedules will follow closer to the time. Contemporary Dance rehearsals will take place on the Fridays.

Second Hand Dance Clothing/Shoes:
Currently there is a large selection of good quality second hand dance wear for sale. Items are displayed in the hall during class times. If you want to buy anything just place your money in the named bag and remove the item leaving the named bag with payment for me to deliver to the original owner. This is free service to our students. If you have any good quality second hand dance clothing or shoes for sale please place them in a named and priced bag and give them to Marian.

Teen/Adult Beginner Ballet:
This class runs on Wednesday evenings and is proving very popular. There is still room for a few more keen, would-be ballet dancers though, so "don't be shy if you would like to try"….

Teen/Adult Contemporary Dance:
Suitable for dancers with some previous dance experience in any dance style. This class runs on Friday evenings and newcomers are most welcome to try out a class before deciding.

Pianists:
This year we welcome not one but three new pianists to the school. Mei-Yin Lee plays for the Monday classes, Mi-Jin Park for the Tuesday classes and Melody Deng for the Wednesday classes. Welcome all of you.

Term 2 Timetable:
Term 1 ends on April 11th and Term 2 commences on April 28th. All current classes will continue at the same day and time in Term 2. Classes held Tuesday - Friday will have ten classes each. Monday classes will have nine due to the Queen's Birthday holiday on June 2nd.

Hall for Hire:
Did you know that the hall is available for hire for young children's birthday parties? Phone the Booking Officer (Kevin) on 473 7665.

Website:
Remember to check out the website every so often as it is updated regularly.

Well that's about all the news I can think of. All the best for another great fun year of dance.

Marian
