Newsletter Term 1 2011

Welcome Back Everyone
Term 1 is well underway and I would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome all of our new students. I really hope you enjoy your classes and the friendly and positive atmosphere at the school. Existing students - I have noticed you quickly settling in again enthusiastically facing new challenges. It is very rewarding to see so many students returning year after year - some classes are completely full already. We even welcome back some students returning after several years away as they "have really missed it"! For so many people dance really does seem to become an irresistible and important part of your life.

Sharing Sessions - Last Week of This Term: 11th - 16th April
As many of you already know, due to the Rugby World Cup the school terms have been changed this year. Therefore we will hold the sharing sessions in the final week of this term rather than term 2 as previously. This is because many classes will have started learning show dances by the end of term 2. Family and friends are warmly invited to come and watch classes during the week from Monday 11th - Saturday 16th April. Students will share work covered so far. We ask that all students come very tidily dressed in normal dance attire and with hair tied back neatly. Level 5 ballet and up - hair in a ballet bun please. No jewellery other than small stud earrings.

This Years Show At Different Time
Again due to the change in term dates we will put on the show earlier as having it in week 3 of term 4 clashes with the secondary school senior exams. Therefore I have booked the Whangaparaoa College Theatre for October 1st and 2nd which is the second to last weekend of term 3.

Level One and Two Ballet Share Roles As in previous years, so the little ones don't get too tired, Level 1 and 2 Ballet will share a role so Level 1 Ballet will only perform in the earlier show on the Sunday and Level 2 Ballet will perform in both the Saturday evening and the later show on the Sunday.

Show Helpers Needed Please
As most of you will already know this show does take a lot of work and we really rely on the generosity of parents to help. We are really looking for new people to step up to the challenge and join our team. We would like to encourage parents from the junior school especially. You need to be a machine sewer. The more people who offer to help the better - that way no one is expected to take on too much. Also doing it ourselves helps to keep the cost down for everyone. The parents who regularly help say that they love seeing their creations come alive on stage and the delighted smiles of the dancers who feel so beautiful wearing them.

Second Hand Clothing and Shoes
This free service is for existing students at the school only. The boxes are very full so if you need clothing or shoes please do ask to have a look. If you wish to put anything in the box please place them in a named zip lock bag so that the items don't fall out. It seems to work best if you write your details directly onto the outside of the plastic bag rather than on a piece of paper. I have a bag with $5 in for an item from the box but I am unable to work out who the money belongs to so if you think it may be yours please see me.

One Step Beyond
Our youth dance company, One Step Beyond, is working hard again this year. This year there are nine company members of which two are enthusiastic newcomers. So far this year the newcomers have been busy learning some of the company repertoire under the guidance of contemporary tutor Grace Woollett. Grace is also choreographing a work for them. For technique class they have Janine Parkes. Next term Backlit Dance Company member Georgie Goater will work with on Saturdays and choreograph a piece and she will also help two or three of the company members to create their own choreographies too. In term three they will work with another guest choreographer so things are very exciting. For those of you aspiring to join the company in the future remember you need to study contemporary dance as well as ballet to be considered.

Happy dancing!
