Term 1 Newsletter 2009

Hi everyone

Term 1 is nearly coming to a close already! It is hard to believe the year is already well underway. Things are going very nicely again this year with class numbers healthy. I am particularly happy to see so many students working at a senior level where energy levels are high and enthusiasm never seems to wane. Dance is such a fun way to keep fit and to look after your body.

Senior students in partnering class

We still have a few spaces at the beginner levels in ballet and jazz so if you know anyone wishing to start please tell them to contact me quickly as traditionally these classes usually completely fill up by mid year. In Term 2 Michelle van den Bergh is off overseas so Collette Dumont will teach the level 6 class on Thursday until she returns in Term 3. Please note that this class will start ½ hour later at 5.30pm to allow time for Collette to get there.

Term 2 Enrolments:
Please check the timetable page for the timetable and fee notice for Term 2. Please let me know if for some reason you will not be returning in Term 2. If you wish to pay the early bird fee rate you need to do this by the first class of term.

Show Helpers Needed Please:
We are already planning for our annual show which will be performed at Whangaparaoa College Theatre on Saturday October 31st and Sunday November 1st. As most of you will already know this show does take a lot of work and we really rely on the generosity of parents to help. At the moment we are seeking people to assist with making costumes and props. If you can sew (even basic hand sewing is needed) and are willing to give a little of your time please could you contact Debbie Powell on 09 479-2496 (after 3pm) or email her at bapowell@xtra.co.nz. If you could help make props please let me know. The more people who offer to help the better - that way no one is expected to take on too much. Also doing it ourselves helps to keep the cost down for everyone.

Level One and Two Ballet Share Roles:
As in previous years, so the little ones don't get too tired, Level 1 and 2 Ballet will share a role so Level One Ballet will only perform in the earlier show on the Sunday and Level 2 Ballet will perform in both the Saturday evening and the later show on the Sunday.

One Step Beyond:
Our youth dance company, One Step Beyond, is as busy as ever and have already performed at numerous events in the community. So far this year they have been privileged to work with 2 highly regarded professional choreographers/dancers, Julie van Renen and Janine Parkes who have choreographed dance works especially for the company. The company recently attended a special workshop given by the head of contemporary dance at the New Zealand School of Dance which is NZ's foremost full time tertiary dance school located in Wellington. I went along to observe and was very pleased to see the girls do us proud as they were technically capable, confident and creative in the very challenging and physically demanding 3 hour long class.

Special Workshop For Contemporary Students With One Step Beyond
and Katie Burton:
In June we will welcome Katie Burton back as company mentor/choreographer and whilst she is here she will facilitate a special workshop for our other contemporary students so they can see the company rehearsing and even get to learn some of the company repertoire. So watch this space as I will give more details closer to the time. In September the company will give a special performance at the hall. One Step Beyond is proving to be very successful and something really positive for our younger students to aspire to. Katie Burton is a highly experienced dancer and choreographer and if you have ever been down to Wellington to see the WOW World of Wearable Arts show you will have seen some of her amazing work as she has been assistant choreographer for that show for the past few years.

Drink Bottles:
Just a reminder - please can all students bring a named bottle of water to class especially during the warmer weather.

Enrolment Forms:
I'm afraid I still don't have one from everybody. If you haven't completed one this year please do so as I need to update my records.

Barres:
We are currently in the process of putting up new barres in the Senior Citizens hall and adding more lower level barres in the Community Hall to cater for the larger groups in the children's ballet classes. They should be ready in time for the start of term 2.

Happy Dancing everyone.

Marian
